Might be traveling to Cancun later this year, June or July. Is it
advisable to rent a car or depend on local transportation? If I go, I
would like to visit Mayan ruins. Any recommendations as to which to
see?

Thank you for any help.

Mexico has greater liability issues, do (it is mandatory) take all the
insurance they will sell you. Driving isn't so bad but you don't wnat to
have trouble in Mexico. I would rent for the day and go to the ruins (it
is what I did) and not have a car most of the time. Beware free car
rental in Cancun it is all about (as are all freebies in Cancun) time
share.

It is NOT mandatory to take all of the insurance.
In fact, if you credit card is primary for foreign locations, that would
be enough for most people.

I always rent a car for RM. I wouldn't stay in Cancun.
I would especially recommend it over a bus for visiting the ruins,
especially Coba.

Cancun is full of American teenagers looking for alcohol.

If bars full of teenagers is not the scene for you, I recommend not
staying in Cancun.

This may be true when renting a car in the US. However, in Mexico most
non-Mexican auto insurance is not recognized. It doesn't matter if you
have a super-duper platinum credit card with a cherry on top. If it's
not recognized, then it's the same as if you aren't carrying insurance
for the liability coverage offered by your credit card.

There are two places (of those where clients go and rent cars
regularly) that I have found dclining insurance is neither wise nor
allowed, Mexico and Italy.

Your credit card insurance will cover the damage deductible. Liability
insurance comes with the car. No company would be allowed to rent without
liability coverage.

Going to the ruins, get on a bus. Is a long day, and coming back about 80%
of the people fell asleep.

If you take the tour you can be led around Chichin Itza like you're
part of a herd of cattle, by a guide who will fill you full of information,
not all of which is accurate. You'll have ample opportunity to sleep on the
way back to Cancun. If you drive yourself you can see: Chichin Itza, the
Balanchanche cave and Ek Balam, or some other combination of ruins, in a day
and drive back to the coast without falling asleep. I've done it a number of
times. Better still you can spend the night in Piste or Valladolid or Merida
and see a lot more than "the ruins".

What's the best time of year for doing this route for 'ease' of finding on
the day accomnodation, without hitting weather that you'd want to avoid (if
possible).
