Best rent-a-car
Hi everybody,
I am currently in USA as a part of my work experience program. In October i am planning to do a trip from San Francisco to New York by renting a car. Can you tell me what would be the best agency to rent a car, or maybe if there are agencies that offer special deals on that kind of travel. Thanx! |

One possibility (especially if you are flexible on the travel dates) is
a "driveaway" company. When people want a car transported but can't do it themselves (e.g., if they're moving house), they go to one of these companies, which matches it with someone who wants to go for a drive but doesn't have a car. The usual terms, plus or minus, seem to be that you put down a refundable security deposit, pay for the gasoline (hopefully you will get a smallish passenger car rather than a giant SUV), have to make a certain reasonable amount of distance each day, are supposed to stick to a fairly direct and perhaps predetermined route, and have to arrange for your own insurance. Some of them will consider foreign visitors as drivers if you meet an age requirement (typically a floor of 23 or 25 years) and have a valid driver's license from your home country, as well as, of course, a look at your passport and (if applicable) visa. They might also require an International Drivers Permit (some, but not all, regular rental-car agencies require that). It might not prove to be best for you, but it's worth a look. Plug the word driveaway into a search engine and browse around a bit. Best of luck, --Joe PS. Even a route chosen for efficiency rather than sightseeing will leave you with a keen sense of how big the US is. The trip is about 2900 miles (4700 km) long. Driving solo, it will probably take an entire week. |

Hi, You mention work experience, which is normally done by young people. How old are you? As this will likely impact your choice of company. |

I am 27 which shouldn't be a problem for any rent a car agency. BTW,
thanks for all the answers |

If "best" means least expensive, shop around at all the nationwide rental agencies via each agency's web site to see what rates you can get. |

Can you tell me what would be the best agency to rent a car, or maybe if there are agencies that offer special deals on that kind of travel. Thanx! Just shop around. Hit the major companies via the internet and then just grab an local phone book and look at the independents. Most big cities have a car rental tax and most airports charge an extra fee, so you might want to consider picking up the car in the suburbs. Centrainly not at the airport. The company stinks and is very dishonest, but Enterprise is considered the specialist in one-way rentals. Now I am going to make an off-beat sugestion. U-Haul. Or its competitors. The smallest U-Haul is a box truck based off a Toyota HILUX (Tacoma) pickup or a Ford E Van. Some places even rent a Ford or Chevy van un-modified, or a standard Chevy Silverado pickup truck. If you go to one of the major company-owned centers, where there will be several dozen trucks to pick from, and slip a $5 to the counterman to get a new and clean one, you will find a vehicle that is indistinguishable from an SUV, with AC, good radio, and all of that, for a price that is quite a bit lower. |

Maybe not U-Haul, though, as our last experience moving with one of their trucks was pretty frightening (transmission went out on a long downhill; truck could barely make it up other hills etc.) |
