Story in full THE number of murders in Scotland has jumped by nearly a
third in the past year, with an even bigger rise in fatal stabbings,
according to new figures which deal a serious blow to the Scottish
Executive's record on violent crime.

Figures obtained by The Scotsman reveal there were 120 homicides in
2006-7 - the equivalent of one every three days and up 29 per cent on
the previous year's 93. Of those 120 killings, 47 people were stabbed
to death, compared with 34 in 2005-6, an increase of 38 per cent.
