Default Guaranteed Cabin Classes? Worth it?

Hi,
I'm interested in booking with a "guaranteed' cabin class,
instead of selecting a particular cabin number.
From what I learned, you are guaranteed the class you select,
with the possibility of being bumped up to a higher class.
The downside is not knowing where your cabin will be in either
case.
I would like to hear any thoughts on anyone booking this way -
are you bumped up most of the time, half the time, or very seldom?
In addition, I would like to know the benefit to the cruise line in
offering this type of booking.
I am looking into a cruise with the NCL Dawn in Feb '05.
Thanks for any info.
Lou

We booked a Cat N GTY on the NCL Star for a Hawaiian cruise last
November. We ended up upgraded to a Cat H (outside with porthole)
which is technically 9 categories - in reality, it's across the hall!
However, it was nice to have the porthole. We booked a Cat. J on the
Cunard Caronia for this June hoping for an upgrade!

Regards,
Doug

Booked on HA "Prinsendam) through Vacations to Go, with guaranteed cabin C
class. Actual cabin given was a C, but was on upper promenade deck adjacent to
veranda cabins, but was larger than friends who had a veranda on same deck.
Worked for us.
