1. Once I find a rental apartment in Perth to move into, how long does
it take to get a phone line + broadband internet connected and ready to
use?

2. Can you recommend a phone / broadband company with a good package?

3.Assuming that broadband will take a while to set up, what is a good
company to use for immediate dial-up internet access?

4. I'm bringing my UK unlocked mobile phone - what is the best
company/deal for me to get a pay-as-u go simcard for use in Oz
Thanks

Simon

Most apartments have a phone line in, most commonly from Telstra. You should
be connected within 24 hours of applying for a phone.

Package prices for fixed line, adsl broadband and mobile are competitively
priced. The best company for you depends on your individual usage patterns.
Telstra and Optus have the most reliable services imho. Broadband should be
available within 48 hours of applying - sooner if you go for Telstra
(Bigpond is their ISP).

Pre-paid mobile service or pay as you go - again it depends on what you
want. There are really just 3 providers - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. The
other many 'brands' are actually resellers of the services of one of the 3 -
packaged in various ways to appeal to different market segments. Personally
I use Vodafone for my mobile; Optus for broadband (cable) and fixed line;
and Foxtel (50% owned by Telstra) for cable TV - but service (or lack of
service!!) levels are similar, and costs likewise close!!

You are obviously NOT into strategic planning, Simon!!

Good Luck!!

wow - broadband within 48hrs - thats amazing. I had to wait 2 weeks in
the UK.
How much approx do u pay for your broadband?

the accomodation (v.basic hospital accommodation) that I'll be living
in during my first week does not have air-con - can i easily find a
cheap fan to use or do u have a better suggestion to cool the room?

i don't get it - why do u say i'm not into strategic planning?
I thought I was being proactive/strategically aware by asking these
questions in advance of my arrival!!

I just hope that I'm not in need of any services at RPH fro the next
12 months or so....... Sorry but I hope you're going to have more an
idea of whats happening and to be better at your profession than you
appear to be at diagnosing how you are going to survive here in "The
Wild West"

Best of luck

You could also check out iinet on www.iinet.net.au They do both dial-up and
broadband. You can even get a discount on broadband from them by using them
as prefered phone supplier.
I wouldn't touch Bigpond with a bargepole. Don't know about Optus' quality.
