Many "amateur" painters will sell their paintings: they just don't make
their living at it.

In any case, even for professional painters, such a law as you suggest would
be totally impossible to police.
Think about it. How would you tell if the painting derived from a "live"
visit or from a photo, maybe taken by a friend?

How would you be able to tell if a shoe was made in the US or another
country? Or software? Why is painting any different? I never claimed the
law would be easy to police. However, it is up to the visitor to be able
to show they are entering on the proper visa. If the immigration
inspector has reason to believe the person is doing something that
violates the terms of the visa, then they will deny the person on entry.
Of course, if the "visitor" readily admits they are in the country to do
something they shouldn't do, then that makes it quite a bit easier for
the inspector doesn't it?

The employer doesn't need to log your keystrokes as all of my
conversations on newsgroup is in plain text, so all they need to do is
sniff the network.

Just out of curiosity, what is it you did to rile this person?
