By the way, my wife also told me that I shouldn't use the credit card,
even in Sungei Wang or BB Plaza because people might copy the data on it
and create a copy. I've never had a fraud case in these past 15 years,
but should I perhaps be careful and only use the credit card in big and
"established" places ?

I had my card cloned whilst in Malaysia in April. I only used it 3 times -
at KLIA Duty Free, at the Royal Selangor factory shop and in a "big"
department store in Kota Kinabalu. I'm guessing it happened in the last
one, but can't be sure.

That happened to me too. After my trip to Malaysia in July-August
2003, someone cloned my debit card and maxed out my account taking a
trip to Songkhla. I got the money back, but had no money in my account
for a week and then my bank wouldn't issue another debit card. I
finally got a new account but don't plan on taking a debit card next
time I'm in Malaysia.

What bank do you use? Should not take more than 48 hrs to replace funds..

It seemed to be prevalent among foreigners and not Malaysians. I used
to think
it was due to the gold credit cards but now I am using gold cards
regularly,
I still don't get cloned card charges.

What is a debit card anyway?

Looks like a credit card usually issued by 'visa or mastercard'
The difference being the money is taken out of your bank account right
away without a grace period. It is like writing a check.

It is always a good idea to get alternative sources of funds when
overseas.

Even locally, I and my wife carry with us more than 2 types of credit
cards,
from different banks.

They had to wait for the charges to "hit" before refunding them. It
was a pretty small bank, but when I opened a new account at a very
large bank, the teller told me that the same thing would have happened
there under the same circumstances.

Dear Elaine,

I had mine clones when I was making a purchase in Geneva and subsequently
someone used the cloned card to make a USD1,000 purchase in Washington.

Hi Alfred,

I'm Malaysian and has been staying here for 28 years peacefully. Of course
there is a crime but not only in Malaysia and of course in every where in
this world. We used to hear that about the rumors in the web-press which is
totally untrue and sometime they (the reporters) purposely make the stories
even to the worst scenario which is totally ridicules.

Not to worry, Malaysian is still a safe country with three main races,
Malay, Indian & Chinese staying together so far and we hope to leave here
peacefully forever. Things that your wife heard might be normal for all the
countries (what I mean thefts are every where) just have to be alert and
careful.

I do travel to overseas even backpacking and seeing nothing like Malaysian
where we have a few races, few language and few religious, I even married to
different race.

Hope this info help you.

Hi,

we are flying to KL in December. My Malaysian wife who routinely reads
the news in chinapress.com.my keeps telling me that the security
situation in KL has worsened substantially over the last few years.

When I'm in KL I'm used to go to the Citibank branch in Jalan Ampang
even late at night and get larger amounts of cash from the ATM. Now my
wife insists that I stop doing that, because she read stories that
people will wait near the ATM, then follow people who took larger
amounts of cash to steal it from them. She also told me that if you stop
with your car at the red traffic light, it can happen that somebody will
open the car door, threaten you with a knife and steal your money. And
so on.

All this makes me wonder if the security situation in KL has really
deteriorated so much...?
