The thing is, you have to be *prepared* to enjoy the American culture
for what it is to enjoy American cities.

It's good that you say that, because American culture is very much
appreciated and enjoyed around the world if you *really* think about it.

Sure, go ask in France.

Default Best and Worst American Cities according to Europeans

The stupid and ugly American responses to this post just goes to show
why we get that rep in Europe!

it comes to quality of life (food, clothes, cars, night life, weather,
women, etc). According to a recent poll these are the impressions of
Europeans about American cities.

5 Best (the least American cities):

Miami

can't speak to this one
San Diego

great to visit with Balboa park and amazing coast, good restaurants,
climate
NYC

what's not to love about this city post Rudi clean up? something for
everyone
San Francisco

culture, museums, natural beauty, great food, music
Boston

history, museums, coastal beauty, start of America

5 Worst (typical American cities):

Houston

one big oil refinery, but good food
Dallas

hmm...just and airport stop to me
Pittsburgh

great revitalization going on, classic "midwest"
Detroit

in desparate need of revitalization but great potential
Cleveland

can't speak to this one, but good location on the lake

Most Overrated (these cities are not necessarily bad, just plain overrated
by Americans who have no standards):

New Orleans

not overrated at all! great food, history, architecture, party - pre
Katrina
Austin

isn't it just a university and tech town? never been there though
Los Angeles

are you kidding? climate, museums (yes), food, hollywood attractions,
beaches
Chicago

again, are you kidding? architecture, history, waterfront location,
museums, food
Las Vegas

isn't this just an oversized disney for adults? this is the worst of
everything american, but can be lots of fun never the less if it's what
your into

Do Americans agree?

Do we every? It's the great melting pot!

I agree. I would add Philadelphia to "worst"-- just for the horrible

If all you know about Philly is cheesesteaks, then you don't know
anything about Philly.

Compared to European cities? You think Rome, Paris or
Athens has better air quality than Philidelphia?

Actually, Americans don't care what Europeans think about American cities.

At a minimum, ours aren't filled with angry Muslim mobs burning cars every
night. Houston, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Detroit adn Cleveland rate higher than
Paris just for that.

HTH. HAND.

I speak for only myself. I have never taking such ratings seriously.
What does "best" mean? What "standards" do Europeans have that are so
much better than those of Americans? What is a "standard" anyway in
the area of deciding which American city one enjoys visiting?

I have been to Miami, San Diego (briefly), NYC (many times), San
Francisco, Boston, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Las
Vegas. In fact, tomorrow morning, three friends and I depart from
Philadelphia on a one week visit to Las Vegas.

Of the cities I have been to on that list, I have had a great time on
each visit. Probably my least favorite is New Orleans, but I still
enjoyed my one visit there about ten years ago.

I think its possible ot enjoy visiting any city; its just a matter of
finding something unique and interesting to do on your visit. Saying
one city is better than another is silly because we all have our own
taste and interests. I have been to Las Vegas many times and I
definitely don't think its overrated. If some people consider my taste
sub-par. So be it. I couldn't care less.

When my wife spent some time in Paris in the late '70s, she described it
as "a dirty town with dog **** all over the streets."

I doubt it's improved since then.

According to this report by the BBC, the Americans are the second best
tourists (and they were ranked the most courteous!).

Vacation Mamma, who dragged William Holden from the pool:

This is why Americans don't really give much thought to the
European's rep while they like to comment on Americans
all the time.

We like to look at persons as individuals. The European
red necks may like to think of the reputation of 300,000,000 as
people being monolithic, but that's just typical xenophobic,
backward thinking.

Wait about 50 years, native Europeans are breeding (or not
breeding) themselves into extinction. The people who are
left will make the most backward fundementalist portion of
Alabama look like Amsterdam during a gay pride parade.

That's right -- go to France, as we do several times every year
because we love the place, and count the myriad American terms,
products, and influences you come across.
