Default Transportion to Arles

In October of 2013, my wife and I will need to get to Arles. We will
fly from the US, probably to Marseilles (is that the closest
international airport?) and then need some transportation to Arles,
where we will board a river cruise ship.

So can sometime tell me what our choices are to get from Marseilles to
Arles? Train? Bus? Taxi (probably much too expensive), approximately
how much they would cost, and something about the schedules of buses
or trains? Or if you point me to web sites with that information, that
would also be great.

Thanks.

There are lots of trains. Probably one leaving roughly every hour
during the day. I believe there is a station at the Marseilles
airport, and that you can go directly from there.

The trip should take (again, very roughly) about an hour.

Here is the English version of the SNCF website. (I find the SNCF
website very annoying. Slightly less annoying in French so if your
French is adequate, use that version instead.

You might also consider flying to Lyon St-Exupery and take the TGV
direct to Arles, a 2 1/2 hour ride. The TGV station is right on the airport.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that's a considerably longer ride than
from Marseilles.

Are there a lot of international flights from the US?

I've seen suggestions to go to Provence by either going to Nice or to
Paris and then train over. So you might spend a day at Paris though.

My thinking was that apart from the direct train connection, St-Exupery
has more flights than Marseilles, but I don't think that either has
direct flights to the US. BTW I was surprised to read that Nice airport
handles more passengers than both - must be all those Russian
billionaires I suppose.

Nice has flights to JFK. For someone coming in from the US, that
might be worth the longer train ride.

But if you're connecting through CDG anyway, go to Marseille.
