Default Procedure to transfer/register US gift car given (gifted) in BC?

Hi, anybody in BC know the best procedure for this? An American
friend is gifting me an old beater car. The car has no insurance. He
intend to tow it (it has a triangle hitch on the bumber, so it can be
towed) to Vancouver. He's dropping it off. This car hasn't been on the
road for 7 years. This car is a 1981 Ford. Any suggestions? Potential
problems?

Tell your friend not to bother, but to call a junkyard instead,
and they will dispoise of it for you. =R=

Contact the nearest DMV or check its web site. I am sure you can get all
the info from your local DMV office.

So he is towing it across the border? He better check with Canadian
Customs first.

Multitude of potential problems. The friend is going to have to declare
the vehicle at the border and pay duties and taxes on it in accordance
with its market value. Contact Canada Customs for all of the details.

After it is in BC, you will not be allowed to register and drive it until
it has been inspected and certified by a licenced inspector. Even then,
since the car might not have been manufactured according to Canadian
standards, substantial modifications might have to be made to bring it up
to spec. You are going to have to pay for all of this yourself,
including the cost of all the towing between mechanics until the car is
roadworthy. See he http://tinyurl.com/yqorrr

For a collectible car, it might be worth the hassle. For a 1981 Ford
beater, I wouldn't bother.

This car hasn't been on the road for 7 years.

Was the car properly prepared for long-term storage, and kept in a
garage? If not, you could have a variety of problems that won't be
apparent until its driven, including rust and corrosion in the engine,
rodent damage to the wiring, etc.

There are several hoops you *may* have to jump through:
* a transfer document from the donor, stating that the vehicle is being
transferred to you on a certain date, at a certain price; it may require
a notarized signature, and may have to be accompanied by a copy of the
last registration certificate in whatever state it came from;
* an import document from Canada Customs, showing when and where it
arrived in the country, what value was assesed at that time, and what
duties were paid;
* a safety inspection report by a certified inspection station in BC (a
limited number of established auto repair shops are authorized to do
these comprehensive inspections, and they are *not* cheap)
* an exhaust emissions report from an AirCare station, if you wish to
register the car in the Lower Mainland area;

The best place to start your search is the Insurance Corporation of BC,
which looks after most car registration and insurance matters. See
their site at www.icbc.com
