That New York City, Madison, Wisconsin, Chicago, Santa Monica, Calif., San Francisco, CA, .......are going car-free and will be car-free cities within a few years. Most American and Canadian cities including Vancouver, B.C., Frisco, TX, and Miami, FL are going car-free. Unlikely. Speaking as someone who lives in the greater S.F. Bay Area and who drives 60 miles each way to work, this will not happen. Much as I love public transport and the ability to bike to work, the hard reality is the cost of living in S.F. and the Silicon Valley where most of the jobs in the area are. Many of the people are like me...they want affordable housing, decent neighborhoods, but cannot afford to live near work. If I wanted to live near work, I will have to pay $1600 for a 800 sq. ft. apartment. As it is, I have a share in a house that's easily 2-3 times the size of the said apartment and my share of the "rent" is about half. Lil |

S.F. proper is seeing fewer cars from residents. You have to be lucky to have your own parking place at your residence. Even luckier if that spot is free. Parking is a premium in the city. I know alot of people who live there and do not own a car. Outside S.F. in the bay area is a different story. A car is a necessity in that case. Bart is great but you still have to drive to the Bart station. Buses are poor except in downtown areas. |
