That New York City, Madison, Wisconsin, Chicago, Santa Monica, Calif.,
San Francisco, CA, and all cities in Europe, Asia, Africa especially Cairo,
Egypt and Johannesburg, South Africa, plus Shanghai, China, and South
American cities such as Bogota, Colombia are going car-free and will be
car-free cities within a few years. Most American and Canadian cities
including Vancouver, B.C., Frisco, TX, and Miami, FL are going car-free.
Their conversion is already starting and should be completed within the next
decade. European cities have already started. Oregon and Washington will be
car-free states and their cities will be car-free. LA will be car-free as
well.

No chance of that happening here in Madison.

Unlikely. Speaking as someone who lives in the greater S.F. Bay Area
and who drives 60 miles each way to work, this will not happen. Much
as I love public transport and the ability to bike to work, the hard
reality is the cost of living in S.F. and the Silicon Valley where
most of the jobs in the area are. Many of the people are like
me...they want affordable housing, decent neighborhoods, but cannot
afford to live near work. If I wanted to live near work, I will have
to pay $1600 for a 800 sq. ft. apartment. As it is, I have a share in
a house that's easily 2-3 times the size of the said apartment and my
share of the "rent" is about half.

S.F. proper is seeing fewer cars from residents. You have to be lucky
to have your own parking place at your residence. Even luckier if that
spot is free. Parking is a premium in the city. I know alot of people
who live there and do not own a car. Outside S.F. in the bay area is a
different story. A car is a necessity in that case. Bart is great but
you still have to drive to the Bart station. Buses are poor except in
downtown areas.
