Daily budget for travelling in London ?? And transport cost ??
Hello,
1) Am travelling to London as well, excluding hotel cost, what is the average total daily budget for one person in London? For example: breakfast: English breakfast lunch: Quick pizza meal or sandwiches in a mid-range restaurant dinner: Fish and chips type + 2 pint of beers in a pub One museum visit day-time One discount price musical e.g. Ms Saigon Some snacks e.g. ice cream, mineral water 2) I am visiting there Friday late night, Saturday, Sunday, leaving Monday evening. Is it worthwhile to buy 3-day pass, or it is still better to buy 7-day Oyster card? I am taking a lot of tubes, i think, with some bus trips (1 to 2 bus trips per day) What is the best transport "strategy"?? Thanks a lot |

I am taking a lot of tubes, i think, with some bus trips (1 to 2 bus trips per day) I'd suggest you pay for single trips in the ordinary way on Friday then buy a three-day Travelcard. The seven-day is very unlikely to be worth it. It would be cheaper to buy an Oyster Pay-as-you-go card when you arrive. This is a smart card that you load a sum of money on, from which fares are deducted for each journey you make. However, the deductions for any one day are capped at a level that is less than the paper Day Travelcard ticket for the zones you have travelled in. You can top up the balance if it gets low. Oyster cards and top-ups are available at any Underground ("Tube") station and at many Oyster Ticket Stops all over London, mostly in newsagents. Price comparisons for zones 1 & 2: 3-day Travelcard, zones 1-2: UKP 15.40 1-day Travelcard, zones 1-2, off-peak (not available before 09:30): UKP 4.90 Oyster PAYG daily cap, off-peak (not before 09:30): UKP 4.40 One caveat: Oyster Pay-as-you-go is valid on tubes, buses, DLR (Docklands Light Railway) and the few trams in London, but not on most National Rail ("main-line") services, whereas paper Travelcards are valid on all of them. For your quoted examples:
Breakfast: £4 lunch as quoted: £5 - £7 Dinner as quoted: £7 - £10 food + a pint of beer around £3 each. Museums: most are free - the main exceptions are the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral (unless you 're just going to a service) Theatre tickets: go to the half-price TKTS booth in Leicester Square, but you could spend around £20-£25, depending on the show. Ice-cream - around £1, mineral water 60p-£1 (but cheaper in supermarkets). Shop around. Some places near major tourist attractions and on main central London shopping streets can really stick it on. Travel: Probably not worth stressing too much over, beyond the point that paying cash for single fares is a mug's game. Go for travelcards - a three-day travelcard for zones 1 and 2 (which also covers buses anywhere in London) would be the simplest option. Oyster would make sense if you're likely to come back fairly often, because you can use it again, but if not, you don't have to have it for a three-day card.
