They take the obvious personal belongings out (though I do wonder if these
personal belongings identify the owner, whether they try to contact them)
and just auction a bag of items (I think, unseen). 5-10 pounds a bag is
normal. I think that the 'profits' are given to charity.

I suspect the Mont Blanc pen will beat the average price for a bag.

This is a good way to get a cheap bag, but (unless you are very lucky)
you're not going to be able to lock it.

I'm glad your stuff is back. As a electronics expert, I recommend you
let your electronics dry as long as you can afford to let them dry.
Remove batteries and accessories and open up ports to let them
"breathe". Don't use a hair dryer. It might melt stuff. But a generic
fan can help. Blowing room temperature air will increase evaporation.

As for the smelly clothes? You're on your own with that one. Since you
live in Italy, you should be able to re-sell unwanted items without
the cost of cleaning them first.

Of course, I grew up, traveled and learned some things. These
generalizations are just that - generalizations. Some seem pretty
accurate, others are only perceptions. It's a big world out there. Oh,
and our family? Dumb Pollacks.
