I am thinking of spending 9 nights in Luxor next May. Is this a
reasonable length of time or too long?

A little on the long side, IMHO. I spent 7 days, including 1 day of
down time and a day trip to Dendara and Abydos. I visited virtually all
the ancient sites and I do take my time.

One thing to keep in mind is Luxor can very hot in May. I found I
couldn't do much on the West Bank in the afternoon.

Is this stand alone or part of a larger trip? If you aren't already,
think about going to Aswan, as well.

I agree, I was there for 4 days in March 2002 and stretching above 5
days is a waste I think.

There are many places to see in Egypt so why dwell so long in Luxor?

May is very hot. Example?
http://www.wunderground.com/history/...lyHistory.html

That's wunderground.com, great source for weather and
I just picked May 14 this year as an example. It was 109F.
You can go to that site yourself and work you way through
the month for more weather records.

I agree with others that 9 days in Luxor is a very long
time for normal tourism. I think Aswan is a lot more
interesting as a place to spend some extended time.
But all the towns along the Nile are quite exotic in their
own way. Ramble around some if you have time.
Buses and the train can move you, no problem.

FYI - here's a web site with lots of photos of how you
might spend such a trip, if you do just go to the various
places.
