Default Summer weather in Bay Area

The San Francisco area tends to be hottest in Sept/Oct. Why is that,
since most places in the US are hottest in June - August? Is it just
the wind coming from the SW?

I just moved to LA and discovered the term June gloom - apparently
June tends to be overcast here. The past few days the high here was
99!

I also lived in the midwest once and June-Aug also was the hottest and
also had thunderstorms in the night.

If you mean San Francisco itself it's to do with the temperature difference
between the ocean and the bay which draws cold air in through the Golden
Gate. At other times of the year the temperature difference is not so
marked. The Peninsular cities on the bay side tend to have rather nice
Summers, however, the other side (e.g. HMB) can be distinctly foggy and
chilly at times. I can remember arriving at SFO late PM and watching the
cloud trying to get over the ridge but being beaten back by the rising heat
from the Bay.

There's an excellent little book that explains all these strange
phenomena

My favorite is driving along the ridge between Oakland/Berkeley and
the "Lamorinda" area at certain times of year, when the Diablo Valley
is under a fog blanket and it's crystal clear over the Bay -- just the
opposite of the stereotype.

Dunno if there's a similar book explaining the climate and weather
down there. Meanwhile, here are some tips on how not to have a blue,
goose-pimpley vacation in various parts of the greater LA area:

CALIFORNIA WEATHER:
On the same day, California can have the highest and lowest
temperatures in the Continental USA. On the same day, one can go
skiing on snow or in the Pacific Ocean, hang gliding and dune riding,
be caught in a deluge, a blizzard, or near-intolerable heat.
California is about a thousand miles North to South and generally
about two hundred miles East to West. There is no such thing as
“California weather”. San Francisco, smaller than fifty square miles,
has about nine climates.

Here's the introduction to San Francisco's temperature chart found on
the Don't-miss Sights page at http://TouringSFO.info/Sights.html::
“Seacliff, where the idle rich live, has the worst; Dogpatch, where
the working poor live, has the best. We NEVER go out without carrying
a sweater or jacket and you shouldn't. Those you see covered in goose
pimples shivering in their shorts are those at whom we laugh not for
their misery but for their arrogance in rejecting the advice we know
they, and you, received.”

The TouringSFO site at http://TouringSFO.info/ has a wealth of
information for you, particularly the Don't-miss Sights and the Flag/
Maps pages with things to see and do and how to get where they are
from from where you are and an excellent bicycle/walking map that
shows our streets' grades.
