Default Royal Lancaster (London) info?

I'm looking for a reasonable-but-nice hotel (aren't we all?) for 3 nights in
London following the conclusion of the Tour de France. Functional (decent,
good access to transportation, decent neighborhood) is more important to my
wife than trying to experience the quintessential English charm (whatever
that is). Would the Royal Lancaster be a decent choice? Looks like it's
located right on top of a tube (subway) stop, and very close to the rail
line that goes straight to LHR airport for the return trip.

Thanks-

I believe you could do far worse, it's in a nice location north of Hyde
Park. See www.tripadvisor.com for reviews, mostly quite positive.

Have never stayed there, but we have had dinner in their
restaurant a couple of times, looks a very nice hotel
and the location is good. Probably a good walk to Paddington
for the Heathrow Express if you have luggage, however.
We stayed at the Royal Norfolk Hotel this last time, two
minutes from Paddington Station, and also more busses into
the West End than Lancaster Gate.

Thanks for the info; also looking into the "London Bridge Hotel" as a
possibility. Did you enjoy your stay at the Royal Norfolk?

Funny, but it seems easier for me to deal with accomodations in France
(where I pretty much don't speak the language) than it is in the UK (where
supposedly we have a common language, although people tell me that's not
really the case...).

It was OK, the rooms were clean and the dining room for
breakfast was on the upper level, not like the dungeons
of the typical Paddington area BBs.
The location is a bit better than Lancaster Gate
as you have the choice of Paddington Mainline and
Underground Stations, plus plenty of busses into the
West End or to Notting Hill.

Do you recall if it was air-conditioned? The end of July could be a pretty
warm time in London...

Didn't really notice, but this was about a month ago
and the weather was on the cool side anyway.
I'm sure their webpage will mention it.
