What is it with people saying that flying is unsafe?

Ignorance, of course.

Also consider, that if you crash your car, you have a fair chance of
survival. But if a plane crashes (unlikely as it may be) chances are your
dead.

IT'S HEAPS SAFER THAN DRIVING !!

Jeremey Clarkson said this last night-

"Consider this. From the years 1990 to 1999 British airlines carried over
700 million people, on 7 million flights! And how many ended up dying? None,
not one!, in ten years".

Many crashes are survivable.

It's rarely the fall that kills you, but the sudden stop proves fatal in
many cases. Then there are the fumes from the smoldering flotation devices
certified as seat cushions.....

As someone said, I think perceived loss of control has a lot to do with
fear of flying. I get nervous flying, but not usually in a car. However,
I become anxious in the back seat of my friend's two-door Saturn: It's
cramped, and I know I couldn't get out in a hurry if something happened.
I'd feel a lot more comfortable in an airplane if I had a door, and a
parachute, despite the obvious arguments that I never parachuted in my
life, and at 40,000 feet you can't jump anyway. Well, fear has little to
do with logic.

This is pretty meaningless. One of these things happens all the time and one
almost never does. The only way you can compare is by falities (or serious
injuries, or whatever you're concerned about ) per trip or per mile or per
hour.
