Carpets in Tehran
Hi all,
I'll be visiting Iran (Tehran) in a few weeks. I'm interested in bringing some carpets to family and friends. Can anyone can tell me how much (aprox) would cost a silk carpet in Tehran market? Please if you bought one or asked the price for one, tell me the size and price.... Thanks MAP |

I have never been to Tehran but I can tell you as a certainty that there is no such thing as "the price" of a carpet in Tehran, or anywhere else for that matter. In this culture, and many other cultures, price of an item is extremely fluid. The price of an item is whatever someone will pay for that item at a certain time and place. Thanks MAP |

Well I know that, for that reason I'm asking for the final price they have
pay. I mean I'm sure no one bought a 8x12 feet silk carpet for 10 USD (I just want a aprox price) MAP "PeterL" wrote in message ... "Leiv" wrote in message s... What size, what knot count, design complexity, reputation of maker, etc. To inform yourself you can search the web for carpet sales. http://www.persiantreasurebox.com/shop/ Or visit your local rug shop for an introduction. Do not expect the carpets to be extremely cheap. Dick Hi all, I'll be visiting Iran (Tehran) in a few weeks. I'm interested in bringing some carpets to family and friends. Every merchant will of course try to get as much as he can; how much do you know about carpets and how strong are your bargaining skills? If by 'silk' you mean 'silk-on-silk', then you're basically talking Qum. Be aware that within this style there are a lot of different quality levels. a 8x12 feet silk carpet 8x12 feet is pretty big and will no doubt cost you a lot. We have never been to Tehran but some years ago while passing through that part of the world we stopped in Bahrain and spent the better part of a morning in an Iranian carpet shop there. My wife knows a fair bit about carpets and is a native speaker of haggling. We left with a purchase that she was completely happy with and which I, a non-expert, accept is beautiful. (It's not my favourite of our 20 oriental carpets--that distinction goes to an 800 000 knot per square metre Nain. But the Qum is lovely.) It is 'only' 145 cm by 102 cm (i.e., far smaller than your 8x12 feet), but it has over one million knots per sq m. The final price was 967.500 Bahraini dinars, which, at that time, was equal to 332 663 Spanish pesetas. (There was no Euro then, but ESP 332 663 is now equal to EUR 1 999,34) Hope that helps. cheers, Henry |
