Saudi Arabia opens its doors to tourists

Imagine a big, big shopping mall. Admittedly, food there is excellent, but the authorities seem so intent on people not doing anything apart from working and spending money, that other places nearby are much more appealing. Johor Bahru next door is an interesting contrast! -- --- DFM - http://www.deepfriedmars.com --- -- |

wrote: Following up to Dave Frightens Me I spent almost a year in Pt Moresby there's little traffic at the moment, so for a top ten you might start with (no war zones please) Singapore Port Moresby Saudi Arabia NZ was top of my list of places I wanted to go but wont get round to, but talking to locals I'm not sure its not just too dull. now Chile is top of that list, followed by Baffin Island. NZ is fantastic if you like outdoors stuff. If you only have a few weeks, I would recommend that over Oz any day. It's much more compact, and there's lots of very cool stuff to do. I'd be happy to return there. -- --- DFM - http://www.deepfriedmars.com --- -- |

But hey, aren't you just so _impressed_ that the Saudis are looking to a future after oil by doing all this? The Saudis would do well to plan for some kind of industry or something, it's not like they are self - sufficient in anything... Even now they are an increasingly poorer country, IIRC per capita income is something like a third of what it was 30 or so years ago at the height of their oil power. They also have the problem of a population that does not have any kind of real work ethic, they are used to sitting around and having cheap immigrant labour do all their work. They also have increasingIy radicalised religious sects and an extremely corrupt ruling family. In any case I don't forecast a real rosy future for the place...promoting tourism is just a silly bagatelle of a thing for them to do. -- Best Greg |

I think most people understand that you are just **** stirring, but unfortunately your little pals may actually believe this ********. FWIW I just spent a week in Tunisia in the company of people from Iran, Oman, Kuwait, Libya etc etc, and I can assure you that none of them was "****ed in the head". They were kind, funny, educated people. The only person who was ****ed in the head was the poor sap who had to give simultaneous translation for a visitor from Kazakhstan. But, as you say, it's just a prejudice and has nothing to do with facts. Mr B; |

A lot of them have cushy govt. jobs. You hear about young men with no jobs racing expensive cars. There are suppose to be a lot of malls. So they must have great attitudes towards visitors. |
