Get a grip on reality! If you can find a place to buy in the USA for
$200M that's located even approximately as you describe, it'll surely
be, in your words, "a dump".

If he's willing to live in a small town, and in a house that's NEAR
the ocean or mountains (rather than overlooking them), I think it's
possible. In many parts of the country (including mine) you can buy a
nice house for $200,000.

Here are median home prices for numerous cities; many are below
$200,000:

Indeed..
Paying $1,000,000 on an interest-only mortgage for the first floor of a 2
story house in San Francisco ... those people need to get a grip!

You did say that you knew you were not going to California.

On 5/10/2007 8:24 PM Pat jumped down, turned around, and wrote:

Willamette Valley in Oregon. One hour to the beach. One hour to the

Bremerton-Silverdale-Port Orchard in Washington. Right on Puget Sound,

Hi,

Me and my wife (both early 30s) are planning to move out of Texas.
We are looking for a location with cooler summers than Texas.
Preferably either in or close to the mountains, and/or close to the ocean.
(we prefer mountains over the ocean, but we want one or the other; not just
flat land in the midwest)

Things we're looking for:
- mountain environment and/or ocean
- within 1 hour drive from a good sized city
- university/college town is always a plus; many young people means that
there's always something to do, and it keeps real estate prices affordable
- within 1 hour from a good sized airport (with service from the major
airlines)
- our budget to buy a house with a view, in a good area of town, is around
$200,000. Since we don't want to live in a dump, or spend hours in traffic,
California is out of the picture. Of course, depending on whether the state
has income tax or not, and depending on the height of the real estate tax,
this can buy more or less house.
In Austin, TX we can afford a $200,000 house. Texas has no state income tax,
but crazy high real estate taxes, which make the monthly mortgage payments a
lot higher compared to $200,000 houses in other states!

Cities we've found and are possibly interested in:
- Asheville, NC = seems affordable, lots of nice nature and mountains

What do you recommend or suggest?

Thanks.

(1)Lewisburg, WV - has an airport, 2 universities in nearby Lexington, VA
(2)northeast Tennessee area Johnson City, Erwin, Elizabethton -
Tri-Cities airport, East Tennessee State U., Milligan College, Tusculum
College
(3)As mentioned - Knoxville, TN .... or nearby Maryville, TN; Maryville
College and Univ. of Tennessee
(4)Greenville, SC - near airport, Furman U. and Clemson U. nearby
(5) Roanoke, VA area - has an airport; near Virginia Tech, Roanoke College

Asheville is getting less affordable -- the San Francisco crowd has
discovered it.

It's hard for me to imagine San Franciscans flocking to Asheville. Well, the
City isn't empty yet. Maybe the house prices will go down.

I know, I was just annoyed with Icono Clast's response.

200k for anything in California or the northeast is a joke, but in the rest
of the country that buys you a nice house.

Same thing is happening in Austin and San Antonio, TX
Many buyers are investors from California, which drives the home prices up.
Especially Austin prices are on the rise, with many lakes in and around
town. (and of course the 300 days of sun per year)
