Longreach to Windorah in Queensland
For anyone who may be contemplating this road trip.
Longreach to Stonehenge to Jundah is 217 km (approx.) single lane sealed road of reasonable quality. Jundah to Windorah is 95 km (approx) single lane sealed road of reasonable quality except for two sections of "road works" each of 8 km and following in quick succession. The road works are actually unsealed detours and are split by a creek with a crossing. The crossing is about 500 metres long and was constructed some time ago thus causing a split in the current road works. As for the detours, the day we drove the road was a work day and the surface was well watered to keep down dust. The surface was well graded and flat. The only problem was getting the mud off after the traverse. Here is a photo of part of the road taken in August 2006. NB This is a dry weather road only despite the bitumen. The country is rather flat with numerous places that "flood" easily and the shoulders of the road are "black soil" that are unforgiving when wet. Ross |
