Hotel bookings - how far in advance?

Hello,

I plan to travel to Switzerland (Interlaken) , Italy (Venice, Florence,
Rome) and Greece (Athens) next May with my wife.

How far in advance do I need to book reasonably-priced hotels at these
places? By reasonable price I mean = $100/night

sometimes they give a special price for advanced bookings

for italy or other countries

www.venere.com

www.hotelclub.com

www.octopustravel.com

www.hrs.de


and so on..

many hotel chains have thier own special prices and offers.

I generally book my hotel as soon as I decide upon a trip
(even before I make sure I can get tickets for the operas I
plan to see). Airline reservations are always the last item
on my list since they're generally non-refundable. (Some
allow you to cancel - with a penalty charge - but only give
you credit towards a future flight.) If the rest of my plans
don't work out, I can always cancel the hotel, so long as I
do it a reasonable time ahead of my scheduled arrival. I'm
sure I don't NEED to book that far in advance, but so long
as I'm going, why not? (I like to have definite plans - I'm
not a "spur of the moment" person.)

May is not the main season, so hotels shouldn't be fully booked. It's
different if you look for a room over Christmas or Easter, but may is
rather low season (no school holidays, so no families travel).

A few weeks in advance should be allright.

In each of these cities there are plenty of hotels to choose from, so if
one should be booked you can easily find another one.

if you need an hotel, probably 3 weeks in advance is OK
if you want to stay in a B&B, especially in Italy,
I suggest you to book 2 months in advance
because the b&bs in Italy must have only few rooms

This is just an agreement; I operate the same way. Some people like to
leave everything to the last minute. I like a rigid overall schedule so
I know where I'm going to sleep, with plenty of room in between for
spontaneity.
