Default Cruising With Meds

Many people have medical conditions which require daily medicine.
Leaving the prescription drugs at home is not an option.

You may have to leave your meds at home?

The problems with medications tends to be more of an airport
problem. So, are you going by air? If so, then I would probably keep
them in the bottles and carry them on, according to TSA regulations. I
am assuming you will have enough to get you through the cruise with no
problems.

When we travel with pills or injections, I've never had TSA or a ship
security person question them. I keep pills in the weekly dispenser, as
you apparently do. Our HMO sends out a monthly summary of prescriptions
we've had filled in order to show their cost vs. our copay. This is a
very handy one-page document on their letterhead that I keep in my
carry-on bag with the pills. While it's not as good as an ink signed
prescription for customs, TSA or shipboard security, it's one heck of a
lot better than nothing at all.

We get our meds filled exclusively at Walgreen's, and they now include a
verbal description of the medicine on the label. I've not done it, but
believe I could pull apart an older plastic bottle to flatten it out and
photocopy the label as a supplement to the HMO list in order to
demonstrate that the pills are the same as depicted by the HMO.

Then I, personally, would follow whatever the requirements of
getting on the airplane are.

It is an airport problem as Kurt says, but it could also be a customs
problem on the way home. Most of the time customs isn't going to take a
look, but once in a while they will and you don't want a bunch of
unmarked pills. I always take more then just what I need and I assume
most people do the same thing.

I do both. That is I take a pill keeper in my carry-on with enough
pills for (in my case) 2 weeks, and I also have the bottles with me
for refills in my regular suitcase.. Sometimes for things that are
OTC (like calcium or aspirin), I will consolidate the bottles. I
figure if those things are questioned, then I can buy more.

Rosalie,

I don't think it wise to put prescription meds in checked luggage. What
if it doesn't arrive when you do? If you missed count or for some other
reason need more than what's in your pill keeper, you are out of luck.
At the very least you have the hassle of trying to obtain them in a
strange town. Then there's the possibility of being questioned by TSA.
If you have the original bottles in your carry-on it's just a matter of
taking the bottles out and showing that the pills match the ones in the
bottles.

I keep my meds with me in my carry-on. When I have reached my
destination and have a chance to settle in, that's when I fill my pill
caddy. I have been stopped in Minneapolis of all airports; since all my
meds were in their original bottles it wasn't a problem. I look at it
this way, it's a little hassle to avoid an even bigger one.
