Queen Elizabeth II visited Belgium

Thu 12/07/07 - Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip, the Duke
of Edinburgh have paid an official visit to Belgium. The visit marked
the 90th anniversary of the battle of Passendale, near Ypres that
killed many thousands of British troops.
The Queen and Duke arrived by Eurostar in Brussels Midi station this
morning.

From there they went to the Méridien hotel where they were received by

Crown Prince Filip (photo) and his wife, Princess Mathilde.

Some ten minutes later, the royal party left for the town of Wavre
(Walloon Brabant) where they visited the Belgian branch of
pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.

Stooled on three themes, the royal visit focused on the company's work
in the field of women's health, public health in the developing
countries and the development of influenza.

Around 11.20 am the royal party left Wavre for the Royal Palace in
Laken.

There, the Queen and Duke had lunch with King Albert and Queen Paola
of Belgium.

In the afternoon, the royal party went to visit the West Flemish city
of Ypres.

Accompanied by Queen Paola and some Belgian government
representatives, the Queen and Duke attended a special last post
ceremony at the Menin Gate.

The Gate carries the names of over 54,000 British troops that were
killed in fighting around Ypres in World War I and is an important
reminder of the many thousands of lives that were lost in the region.

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the building of the Gate.

The Queen and Duke concluded their visit by attending a remembrance
service at the Tyne Cot cemetary in nearby Passendale where they laid
a wreath in front of the war memorial.

The royal visit ended around 5.30 pm, after which the Queen and Duke
returned to Britain.
