Well, I have my newsreader set to collapse threads, so I just skim past
the obviously idiotic ones and then mark everything "read" when I leave

That has been my tactic also. The genealogy news groups that I read also
have the same problem from time to time. But, it is worth it to take a look
at them anyhow.
