Tanzania
Hi,
I'm travelling to Tanzania next year (Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam). A few things I'd like to know... I'm Canadian and need a visa. Can I get that at the airport upon arrival? What about Kenya? I have to transit Nairobi on Swiss Air to get to Dar es Salaam. Can someone inform me on the currency regulations that are in place? I read that you cannot export more than $1000 USD, but what if you're bringing more than that in? Tanzania is actually my first stop on a three week holiday and I do anticipate I will need more than $1000 for the duration. I won't have had a good chance to spend a big portion of it on my first stop. Would travellers checks be a way around their export regulation? And is there a way to legally take in and out more than $1000? I'm thinking I need $2500 to $3000. Thanks in advance, S. |

I stand to be corrected here, but I suspect that the $1000 maximum export number refers to Tanzanian citizens, not visitors. I've regularly travelled to Tanzania and Uganda with more than that, and never had any problems. As far as I'm aware, visas are not available at Tanzanian airports. I would contact the Tanzanian embassy in Canada as soon as possible about a visa. Cheers, Marc |

But we are Austrian and have no Tanzanian embassy in our country. Maybe for people like us they issue visas. safari njema Michael |

Cheers, Marc- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Hi Marc, I stand corrected, the country with the $1000 currency export laws is Zimbabwe. I'm travelling to half a dozen countries and got confused about which country I was reading about. In Zimbabwe there's a $1000 US maximum export (or equivalant in other currencies), no limit at all on the import, so I can take in $2000 but can only take out $1000... which really concerns me because my trip won't even be half over. I'm only entering Zimbabwe on Safari (starting in Victoria Falls by charter plane). I do believe you have to fill out a customs declaration of what you take in and out, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Cheers, S. |

A little hint on the sidelines---in many countries, including,
for example, Kenya and China, you can at any time pull money from your bank account through an ATM, using a Maestro debit card. Very convenient, always good rates. For backup, you could carry some travellers cheques and a credit card. No need to carry large amounts of cash. Hans-Georg -- No mail, please. |

For Angola and Zimbabwe, this would be impossible. Angola does accept foreign cards, and Zimbabwe has inflation problems making it risky to try changing money that way. I'm also concerned i won't know how much I'm pulling, because I can't find out my balance without calling into the bank. Online banking doesn't work for me because I don't have an SSN, so I can't sign up. I'm not able to do anything online with Visa either. Will be difficult to call from Africa. Cheers, S. |

Of course, if you're concerned about bringing along a big bag of currency, it may be better to get this done at home, well in advance of your trip. For other financial items, you might want to look into paying some of your items in advance (at least in part), although I do recognize that wiring funds can be a hassle. -hh |
