but a thousand years ahead in culture and history.

And in social programs - like universal medical care.

Su Europ is way "behind" the US with the use of air conditioning.

Just: what for ?

I lived (here in Europe) for more than 30 years in houses built in
15th, 16th and 18th century - stone walls 1 to 2 feet thick.
Absolutely no need for air conditionning

Now I am living in a 20 year old house with real insulation
- no need for air conditioning neither

And I met a Swiss emigrant in Florida - retired construction
engineer - who lived there all year without air conditioning.
Just sufficent insulation and a system to control humidity
in the whole house.

Sure you will find buildings in Europe that might need
air conditionning during a short period in Summer, and
many have. But imho no reason for not travelling in/to
Europe in Summer.

If there is a reason for avoiding travel to/in Europe
during Summer, it would be imho the many
overcrowded and overpriced tourist areas and
tourist attractions.

I'm trying, but it's not easy. It's a real miracle that she manages to breathe unaided.

It sounds much better in French, but then, everything does.

fat people (aka americans) need more cooling than the rest of
us.....you often see them driving round disneyland on battery powered
scooters......pretty soon they will evolve back into the sea and
compete with the whales for plankton

I have been to Europe on four different trips, two in May, one in June
and one in July. We never had air conditioned rooms and never needed it.

Don't give away all Europe's secrets. IME the chance of having air
conditioned
accommodation in Greece is very low. OTOH you can open the windows at
night.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to suggest that.

Also, most of the island/beach accommodation we've had in Greece has
been well ventilated naturally so even during the day, it was a
comfortable respite from the outside heat. Whereas even in non-extreme
heat, a stuffy hotel room can become uncomfortable almost anywhere in
summer, and opening the window onto a noisy (or polluted) street may not
be a practical option. As a result, we used the Ibis a/c in Marseille
last July, when in fact it wasn't that hot outside...

The inside 'courtyard' rooms in old Spanish hostals etc. can be
suprisingly comfortable even in hot weather... while MIxi doesn't
believe it, building design can be an important factor.

It's actually becoming much more common these days in Greece than it used to
be, although at the time of year I normally go (May or September) it's often
not switched on (or necessary). If one does happen to hit a very hot spell
though, A/C can be a boon - opening windows doesn't work if the outside
temperature is just as hot as inside!

We live in N Europe all the year round without needing air conditioning. However
in the south of France it is a good thing to have in summer.

I was in Nice one year in the middle of June. No AC and didn't miss it.

I agree - although the location of a hotel room or two made sleeping
difficult due to noise from the open window, I managed just fine without
air-conditioning. My "past few summers" remark referred to the heat
waves that reportedly led to some deaths in Paris.
