Default Auckland -- Interesting???

We are planning to go on a 21 day cruise next March that starts in
Auckland. Auckland is the only place in NZ on the cruise and we're
having 2nd thoughts. Is Auckland a place to spend a couple days?

If NZ is such a beautiful place, it seems a shame to only visit one
city. The cruise ends in Sydney. I'm thinking a Vantage or Grand
Circle tour of NZ and Oz could be more worthwhile.

Opinions?

No problem to find things to do in Auckland for 2 days, but you are right
that NZ is a place well worth visiting more generally. Having said that
though, I don't think a cruise is the best way to visit either NZ (or Oz for
that matter). NZ is best visited by car (if you want to travel
independently, there are loads of motels) or by a coach tour (if you want
someone else to make all the arrangements).

When I visited a few years ago, it was for the scenic driving, so I
generally avoided Auckland. However, one of my interests are volcanos,
and there are a number of them around Auckland. At the top of one,
iirc to the northeast, is an old WW2 coastal battery and a nice place
for a picnic.
