The eagle is pretty difficult at that size. Any chance you can crop
the original down to a full sized image of the eagle itself and post
it?

Nice pic of the lizard! It's almost certainly a female agama, but I
can't be more specific, because I've never seen a book that detailed.
Wikipedia says that there are 31 species, and Brittanica online says
'about 30'. Wikipedia lists the scientific binomials, but no more
info.
I notice that most websites list all their agamas as Agama agama, but
that's probably from lack of more specific information.

PS - Pat, my trip-mates in Uganda thought I was a dilettante birder. I
suppose I used to be much more bird-focussed, now I'm always wishing
for better light and chasing pix!

Hi Pat

Can't say we 'suffered' from the aircon in Stonetown.
We pretty much left it on at night and it was just right. Maybe you had a
duff unit?

I have to confess we had a room upgrade due to our anniverary, and got one
with a balcony overlooking the sea - WOW!
Perhaps it wasn't as cold if it was larger.

Anyway, can't say that 'too cold' is usually a problem in Zanzibar. )

We did think the Serena lodges were worth the (small) extra cost from last
time.
Sparkling wine for breakfast did it for me!

About the Carnivore, as I understand it the government thought it gave out
the wrong message, both to tourists (ie 'its okay to eat the wildlife')
and
to the locals, who are of course not allowed to hunt the game in the
parks.
So although it was farmed, you can't eat the game there anymore.
A pity as I was quite partial to a bit of hartebeest.

Nice pics, especially the Cheetahs.

OK, some bird IDs:
31: Common Bulbul
32: Nubian Woodpecker
43: Rosy-patched Bush-Shrike
44: Black-faced Sandgrouse
166: not Sandgrouse, but White-bellied Bustard.

Liz, weren`t the photos great? Brought back memories for me of all the
Serena hotels and lodges Charles and his wife stayed in.

Thanks Charles,
Liz is a serious birder! If it were safe to go, the lower Tana river
area where we were for three years in the early eighties, has about 140
species of birds I think somebody recorded and spotted ( sorry Liz if
jargon is wrong! ) As for the game being unavailable at the Carnivore,
that is a shame, I loved the taste of some barbecued antelope I once had
in Nigeria. I used to enjoy going to the Carnivore.
I agree with you about the Serena lodges and hotels, they are good, were
you cold at the Zanzibar one with the really cool air conditioning like we
were?

Charles,
glad you both had a lovely anniversary, the Serena on Zanzibar was
great, my husband loves dhows, so that is what we have lots of pictures
of, I will have to look them out. There were also some interesting
things to look at in the hotel such as old instruments ( not musical)
I will find the pictures and get back to you,
Pat.

Hi Liz

100% crop link attached (slightly oversharpened, but I do struggle at this
kind
of magnification!).
http://www.tomalin.org/misc/eagle.jpg

I guessed the lizard was an agama, but a) there are lots of different ones,
as you say, and b) I suspect the females are all look the same anyway !!
Should have taken a DNA sample!

Thanks for you help - I like a bit of detective work.

Ah Pat - you must mean these:

http://www.tomalin.org/misc/serena2.jpg

I think the building used to be the old phone exchange or wireless office,
and they found these in the basement when they renovated.

Agree the dhows are amazing - particularly watching someone struggle to get
the sail up on his own!!
Great fun.

Hi Tad

Great collection.
It looks like you spent some time on the east coast (beaches etc) which we
did a few years back with the children.
We decided to stick to Stonetown this time, but it was nice to see your pics
from the other side - particularly with the locals.

I must get back there again with a decent camera!
My last efforts with a 1 megapixel digital were pitiful -
http://www.tomalin.org/bedford/afric...ibar/index.htm

A few 35mm ones did get scanned but they never come out so well on the
screen

Cheers
