Hi there Booked a holiday for Xmas and New Year to Cape Town.We will be staying at the Cape Garden Hotel near lions head. Anyone stayed there? Any must sees, shopping , prices etc.? Much appreciated. Have ordered a guide book but have not received it yet. How safe is it to go out at night? Is it a good bet to hire a car? -- Evelyn in Scotland |

... There is a city tour you can take. they take your around Cape Town and it includes a penguins tour. Can't remember the name. Hotel can help Just got back from Capetown, and we did a week without a car. There are tours by three companies - Springbok Atlas, Hylton Ross and another. We did a tour that went to Hout Bay for the Seals, Simonstown for the Penguins, Cape of Good Hope and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and with a good guide/driver this seemed better than driving as I was also able to see the scenery. We also did Whale Watching at Hermanus and the Wine Route Tour. Worked out about £75-80 for the two of us for each tour. Pick up from your hotel. Best value is the open top bus for £9 each which allows you to hop on and off . We took this on the last day, and Table Mountain was open after being closed for a few days due to weather. The queues were horrendous, luckily we had gone up on our first day.with no queue.. There is a trip that picks you up from the hotel and drops you early at the Cableway station, and then allows you to return via the open top bus for the rest of the day. This would seem to be a good way without a car. Tips - Go up Table Mountain as soon as you can, as there were many people staying in our hotel who were leaving without going up because of the weather. If you want to do Robben Island, book early If it's a clear day, do a sunset cruise on one of the yachts from the Waterfront (like Esperance - magic!!) Have a great time - we did! John |

You will have a wonderful time and yes you do need a car to fully enjoy the area. The wine route is a must (unless you detest wine of course). Driving is very easy and the roads and signs are good. Have a good time. |
