Seeking Great Smoky Mountain Railroad excursion recommendation
Hi
We want to take a trip on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad in Western North Carolina in early May and want to seek your recommendation wrt the following available trips in early May. The 1st trip option is take a 4.5 hour roundtrip from Bryson City. According to their website, www.gsmr.com, this trip departs from Bryson City and travel to the Nantahala Outdoor Center and returns, covering the Horseshoe Curve, Fontana Lake Trestle, Tennessee River, and the Nantahala River Gorge. The 2nd trip option is to take a 4 hour roundtrip from Dillsboro. According to their website, this trip departs Dillsboro, travels to Bryson City and returns, going through the historic Cowee Tunnel, crisscrosses the Tuckasegee River, passes through old railroad towns and scenic meadows on its way to Bryson City's historic depot for a 1 hour and 25 minute layover before returning. We are looking to take the trip that is more scenic! And would appreciate your recommendation and experiences with these 2 rail trip options. Thanks Bob |

Seeking Great Smoky Mountain Railroad excursion recommendation
My family took the Bryson City -Nantahala Outdoor Center Trip waaay
back in autumn, 1997. We had indoor seats- so we kept cleaner (and warmer) than the folks in the open cars...but you still will get black soot stuff on you..oh well. The ride was fun- the interior was nicet oo. We liked the back and forth back and forth motion the train car gave- pretty relaxing. My son was small then- kindergarden. but he remembers the trip and liked it very well. We still have the train whistle momento in his room. The scenery was beautiful even at Thanksgiving time...I can't imagine how lush the scenery would be if taken in May. Ever seen the movie Nell? The scenery is similar. When we stopped at the Outdoor Center - there wasn't too much to do if you wern't going to pay a huge amount for a sandwhich ( we took a picnic) but we did get to see people kayaking over some white waters. hth...
