In those times there was the Republic of Venice..
one of the most important States of its times.
It was then invaded by Napolean troops..
defeated. occupied. and sold to Austria.
a gold coin issued by the Venetian republic was the Zecchino.. one of the
most accepted currencies in thsoe times.

let me add that in Italy there have been 4 Sea Republics

Venezia
Genova
Amalfi
Pisa

for one reoson or the other. all of them disappeared with the exception of
the Republic of Venice.-
