Any town that has more than about 50,000 people will have people used to being in crowds and accustomed to walking on one side. When I was in England, I found that people generally walked on the left and entered buildings on the left. It was there were lots of tourists, such as in London, that things got confusing. The tourists walked on the right; the natives on the left (or the right when there were more tourists than natives) |

And the men all wear top hats and the ladies have crinolines. The children all look as if they are auditioning for Mary Poppins. -- JohnT |

Some of them don't do too well with sticking to one side of the road when driving, either - at least not here in Arizona! |

I don't know where you are, but I've never lived or traveled anywhere where people stick to one side or the other of the sidewalk. I read somewhere that it used to be the law in Sweden many years ago. As far as how it works in practice, I notice that here in Germany, people tend to pass each other on the right if they meet head on on the sidewalk, same as the traffic rule. I have the impression that in the UK, people tend to intuitively pass each other on the left. Recently in a shopping mall in the UK I found I had to make a conscious effort to deviate to the left in order to avoid colliding with people - not that it came to a collision, just to this point where you have to stop and go round somebody.
