How to get from Windhoek to Etosha?
A friend is arriving in Windhoek next week and will be spending 28 days in
Etosha. He planned to fly to Etosha via Air Namibia and just learned they have cancelled service althogether on this route. He doesn't want to rent a car and drive if he can avoid it. So, anyone know of busses or other options for getting to Etosha from Windhoek? Would greatly appreciate any help you can offer. Bill |

It is cheap, easy to drive and very safe. Regards, Hans ================================== Hans Martens Wildlife & Nature Photography http://www.wildpicture.com ================================== |

How to get from Windhoek to Etosha?
The drive is easy, 5 hour maximum, and a real pleasure. We managed a one-way
hire with one of the companies at the airport, so we could be free to travel onwards beyond Etosha by our own means. Flying would be expensive on a charter, even from the likes of Wings over Africa. We are planning on going to Namibia next year. What can you do in Etosha
without a car? I thought it was a necessity unless you were on an organized tour. In that case the tour operator would advise on connections. Scott "Bill Hilton" wrote in message ... Sounds like the two options are a charter flight or driving up then?
From: "Sue & Jeri Drake" The drive is easy, 5 hour maximum, and a real pleasure. My friend was in a serious roll-over accident in Namibia in 1998 and spent several days in a hospital there, which was apparently a very unpleasant experience. He seems to want to avoid driving up at all costs since he's a European living in a large city who doesn't own a car and doesn't like to drive, especially on the wrong side of the highway. From: "Scott Elliot" What can you do in Etosha without a car? As I recall from my trip there, very little. He's meeting someone with a camper van in Etosha and was hoping to avoid having them drive down to pick him up, I guess. Thanks for the replies (you also, Hans). Bill |

I'd suggest having your friend contact his lodge at Etosha & ask if they have suggestions and/or info on buses. I was in Namibia in 2002, and there was regular bus service from Windhoek to Otjiwarongo, where I was staying. When I wanted to go from Otjiwarongo to Etosha, there was no bus service, and I was also nervous about driving (that wrong side of the road thing bothered me too). The lodge at Etosha (Mokuti Lodge) arranged to have a driver pick me up in Otjiwarongo-- I believe it was about $120 or a bit more however. Since I was at this lodge, I just did their morning and afternoon game drives. I flew back to Windhoek (that Namibia Air flight that you say is now cancelled) however... Bill |

I agree that a car is necessary en Etosha (unless you just want to sit by the pool). Driving in
the area should not be all that difficult. There is actually very little traffic. Chessie wrote: "Scott Elliot" wrote in message news:3AIhc.2724$mP2.662@edtnps89...
