JNB airport hotel
Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a hotel nearby JNB
(Jan Smuts) airport for an overnight transit (actually, have 26 hours). We were going to stay at the Hilton Sandton but transit there + room & taxes will run almost ZAR 2000. Too much even if we do have Hilton status. I see there are 2 Holiday Inns by JNB (the graden court apparentl charges for shuttle). How is the closer one? Any decent B&Bs nearby? |

There are many options in Johannesburg and 26 hours is a long time to
remain cooped-up in an hotel room :-) There are several hotels very close to the airport. Of all of them I'd reccomend the City Lodge with rooms at around R350. Their site is www.citylodge.co.za For B+B's I've seen a list at http://www.travelsa.co.za/URL/jhb.htm but I don't have any info on any of them, so I can't make recommendations. Generally though, B+B's quality relates to price. None will be absolutely horrendous, but cheaper ones may be spartan. What are you going to do in Johannesburg for the 26 hours? If you let me know what your particular interests are, I will gladly make suggestions... Regards, Marc - Johannesburg. Both HIs are ok. I stay in the one about 3kms away, it's a bit cheaper
(I think it's about ZAR550-600 per room) than the one right next to the airport. It also has an Irish pub and other restaurants on the premises. |

We were going to go to Sandton but I've been told it is really like any Faceless Suburbia U.S.A. (tm) so going to Sandton was ruled out in light of the total cost staying at our favourite hotel. The ZAR 500 transfer (there are 2 of us - and Magic Shuttle is ZAr 95 each OW) starts to make less sense too. What we'd do? Probably relax, try some cuisie, see arts & crafts places. I know not much out by the airport but probably not much more than Sandton from what I hear. |

Speaking of the shuttles - you can expect to pay a small
fee for the transfers. It is added to your hotel bill. The Holiday Inn Garden Court closest to the airport is (as mentioned by another poster) a good value, with a small steakhouse/pub. The included breakfast will surprise you. Really nice. Also near the airport is a large hotel with a casino and some shops - Caesar's. And the best hotel there is literally right on the airport grounds, the Sun Intercontinental. There is another Holiday Inn Garden Court 10 miles west of the airport, at the Eastgate shopping mall. With so much time to kill, this might be a good choice. http://www.southernsun.com/Sunrise/H...,1994,,00.html There's also a large open air market there you can walk to that has loads of touristy junk plus all the normal flea market things. Any of the hotels can explain the shuttle system to you if you email them. |

I think it's ZAR21 each way which is added to the hotel bill (ie you
don't pay the driver). The shuttle to the closer HI is free, so maybe for 2 people it evens out the price difference between the two HIs. |
