Dear liz,

thank you again for your message.
Sorry for being late to answer to you but i had a flu that made me
stuck with fever in my bed... I took this few days opportunity to
watch and to sort my pictures from botswana where we had a wonderful
safari last year.

So i hope, the nest is still there !

Best regards

Yes!
There is a nest in the escarpment (or at least there was in 1994) which was
to certain knowledge there in 1935, probably longer. The birds just build it
bigger and bigger every year. I have a slide with a bird sitting on the nest
which gives an incredible sense of scale: sadly, the bird is so tiny
compared to the nest that you only really see it properly when projected: I
have never been able to 'tweak' it so that it shows on a monitor at web
resolution. Maybe I should have another try over the w/e if I get time.

Anyway, I'm sure you're going to have a great trip.

Frederic,

yes, from your message I can see that you have thought this out
and planned it well. In that case I retract my message.

I guess you will enjoy Lake Bogoria (the former Lake Hannington)
and of course also Lake Baringo when you look for birds. You may
even want to stop over at Lake Naivasha, perhaps just briefly
for lunch in the Lake Navasha Country Club.

Meru has the problem that you have only a few wide racetracks
that look to me as if they were built for car racing, but you're
not allowed to leave these. You may still see some animals, with
luck the rare lesser kudu.

Meru has some camp sites and one or two of them also have huts
you can rent. They are not very well equipped, but they may
still be better than a tent if you bring everything you need,
and they don't cost much either. I once used one of them.

I never got to the far end of Meru National Park, but there is
at least one new, expensive lodge there, and since the park
borders on Tana River, the riverside may be interesting, but it
is far. Meru National Park is quite big. You can read some
details at
http://www.kws.org/meru.htm .

Shaba can be nearly devoid of large animals, which is surprising
when one considers that it is near and similar to Samburu. There
are some klipspringers though, which you may be able to see and
photograph. By the way, there are some at Lake Bogoria too.

But all this can change and one can never predict what becomes
visible on a particular day.

I hope you'll report after your trip.

Dear Hans-Georg,

thank you very much for your advices and informations.
PLease find below my answers and comments.

You may even want to stop over at Lake Naivasha, perhaps just briefly
for lunch in the Lake Navasha Country Club.

In fact, we have already been there and have spent two lovely nights
in the Lake Navaisha Country Club. I have a very charming souvenir of
the time we spent there watching birds, wandering in the garden. We
also spent a full half day walking with a guide on Creshent Island. I
remember we have seen Zebras born from the day.

You may still see some animals, with luck the rare lesser kudu.

Fine ! I wish we have the opportunity to.

Meru has some camp sites and one or two of them also have huts
you can rent. They are not very well equipped, but they may

In fact, we have chosen with our travel agency a formula which
includes for the whole safari, a driver-guide, a cooker, a car and a
comfortable tent. We have had some nights in some lodges we wanted to
go to (Intreprids Camp in Samburu).
So i think we are going to camp in Meru N.P.

Shaba can be nearly devoid of large animals, which is surprising
when one considers that it is near and similar to Samburu. There
are some klipspringers though, which you may be able to see and

OK. I know that Shaba is not as rich as Samburu but we wanted to have
a few time there especially for landscapes that seems to be beautiful.

I hope you'll report after your trip.

Sure i will ! I think you may have report here and a way to see my
pictures.

Thank you for all.
Best regards.

Frédéric.
