Thank you Joseph,
OK. Two of us will be in NYC on Oct 26 to 31 (to avoid Halloween and NYC
Marathon).
We probably do average 2 return trip each person (4 trip total) per day.
So, one signle regular MetroCard is probably good for us party of two?
How much should we get $45? Can we get our money back if we do not use up
all $45?
The MetroCard vanding machines available at all MTA stations?
The MetroCard web site does not tell me what qualify for reduced fare?

Your target value is about $54 of rides (four round trips a day for 6
days). $45 real cash will get you $51.75 worth of rides, so it looks
like you'd need $47.25 should make it exact. Because of the discounts,
the MTA does not allow for refunds, since there's no way to know how
much is real money and how much is phantom discount money. There are
rules against selling any remaining fares to another person, but you
could give the card away.

However, for a six day visit, I'd suggest two $27 unlimited cards, $54
total. This has a few advantages:

You don't have to stay together for all the subway/bus rides, since
each will have their own card.
If you take an extra ride even one day, you're ahead of the game.
If you only take the two round trips a day for the six days, you've
lost nothing off the full fare.

This is Metrocard page: http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm

All of the subway stations have vending machines. The above web page
has links to local stores that sell the Metrocards. Be sure to only buy
a card at a store that is wrapped in cellophane like this, though this
is for an old fare structu

Reduced fare for 65 and older info is he
http://www.mta.info/nyct/fare/rfindex.htm

However, I'm not sure how you can get a reduced fare Metrocard from out
of town. The walk in center is near Wall St. So if you're planning to
visit there, perhaps that could be your first stop. They are open M-F
9a-5p. Web site http://www.mta.info/nyct/fare/rfcenter.htm

If you're eligible, everything is half fare. Each of you needs your own
card and you'll wind up with a New York souvenir with your picture on it!

No. 15 minutes on NJ Transit to Penn Station if they want to go
uptown unless they can't afford the $7 off peak round trip. If they
are going to make at least five round trips in a calendar week, they
could buy a weekly ticket for roughly the same amount of money, and
then they could go back and forth as much as they want for a flat price.

Dear Michael, is there any weekly NYC MTA subway ticket, or tourist
package type stuff?

There are 1 day, 7 day, 14 day, and 30 day unlimited ride cards. I
don't remember the prices off hand, but everything you need is at
www.mta.info and www.metrocardbonuscalculator.com (for figuring out pay
per ride cards). If you're going to do a lot on on-and-off travel, they
may be worthwhile. Just do some planning and see if unlimited ride
cards beat the pay per ride card discount or get it anyway if it's worth
the convenience.

Not sure what you count as reasonable, but this is a nice place:
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trave...ooklyn-bridge/

It's

very close to the subway, and has reasonable parking rates.
If you are a Marriott Rewards member you can usually get a pretty good deal.
Chris

Thank you Chris. For Brooklyn Marriott,
Travelocity and Quikbook rate are exactly the same $359 per night on Oct 26.
Yes, we are Marriott Rewards member, Marriott web site price is also
same $359 per night.

Actually, Courtyard Jersey City Newport is listed $179 per night.

Have you considered any of the Affinia properties in Manhattan proper?

And no, you don't need to buy a SmartCard. The machines still sell non-
reuseable cards.

My son and I rode the PATH train 2 weekends ago. I was
chagrined to learn that you can no longer just plunk your spare
change in the turnstile machines, but rather have to first go
to the card machine and then get a single-use paper card which
instantly becomes garbage.

I made a trip from Newark to 33rd while the WTC station was closed,

So that means they would have to burn two hours a day getting to/fro

the hotel.

Thats no bargain.

So who is suggesting they stay in Newark

There are many fancy hotels in "the new downtown" Jersey City, one
stop, 5 minutes, from WTC.

That is the time for the ride, but the trip has to be considered
"door-to-door".

You make it sound like its 5 minutes from the hotel (which could cost
just as much as one in the city) to WTC.

I guess you've never walked out the main entrance of the Hyatt and
crossed the street to the Exchange Place PATH entrance.

Thats right. I never have.

It it still takes longer than 5 minutes from the Hyatt to WTC. ;-)

Only if you include the time you wait on the platform for the train to
come.

Not exactly. What about the time getting down to and back up from the train?

There's now a W hotel in Hoboken (the only hotel in Hoboken), on the
river, a few blocks from the NJT/PATH station. Presumably they're
competitive with all the other classy chains you're talking about.

Travelocity rate for W Hotel on Oct 26 is $355 per night cheapest room. May
be for business, but unable to afford for vacation. LOL.

In Hoboken? Sheesh!

But PLEASE don't stay in Noo Joisey. It can take you an hour or more la

night to get back to your hotel.

Slim, I kind of agree with you. So far, unable to find any significant
attactively priced NJ Hotels on Hudson near PATH stations. May be somebod

can enlight me a little here. Thank you.

Slim doesn't know what he's talking about. He has the prejudice of the
ignorant.

If you don't like the Hyatt and the other chains in "new downtown"
Jersey City, there's not much we can do for you!

Sure there is Pete! You can recommend a hotel or two in NYC that will
not require them to cross the Hudson to get to/from thier hotel.

Most of my friends from out of town like to stay at one of the Affinia
properties.

www.affinia.com

Conveniently located, within walking distance of many of NYC's
attractions and transit hubs.

In Chicago 15 years ago when I got my mother a discount CTA card, it
took about a month for the request to be processed (she didn't need to
be there to get it done), but it was good forever after. It probably
works similarly here, so you probably have time to do the paperwork
before your visit.

(I do hope you're not reading this in rec.travel, because google
groups won't let me post there.)
