Any input? I just got my plan ticket! I will be backpacking around
Europe with a friend next summer. I haven't traveled much. It will be
the first time I stay in hostels and I will have to be tight on the
money situation. What should I bring to save money? We are headed to
England, Ireland, France, Germany and possibly Poland. Anything I should
definitely see or do?

Yep. When in Germany, go to Austria. Definitely more beautiful.

I second the suggestion to go to the former eastern european countries.
They are still a lot less expensive. Serbia, Croatia, the baltic
nations, Poland, Czech republic, slovakia etc, etc. Lots to see and do.

You can always hit the big ticket locations when you have more money in
the future to spend.

Have fun

Depends on which part of Germany you're comparing it to, but it is also
a great country 8-)

There is no such thing as too many books.

Too few bookshelves can, however, be a problem.

Yeah. I'd find it difficult to find a place more beautiful than the Rhine
Gorge, with all the castles and little towns. Or the beautiful Harz mountains,
not as dramatic as the Alps but very lovely. Or the view from Kaiserstuehl in
the area of the Schwartzwald, with it's view into a half a dozen countries.

Try to hook up with fellow backpackers. That way you can all go in on
hotels instead of hostels. In some areas the hostels are really bad. Be
care and DO NOT OVERPACK.

When I first went I first read this group and I also visited:

Big help from both.

Be advised, in some areas the hostels are really good, too. I've never been in
a hostelling international hostel in Continental Europe that was really bad.
Yes, institutional on a couple of occasions, but usually very nice.

The one in Salzburg is nice, too. Very convenient, small dorms, great breakfast,
located near everything.

The DO NOT OVERPACK advise is golden. Pack much lighter than you think you need
to. How much you are carrying will affect your experiene much more than how
boring your wardrobe is.
