Default Rock Climbing on RCCL

On our recent Serenade crossing, I climbed the wall with little
difficulty. Although it was truly awesome to be up there, I felt a bit
like it was cheating, because the guy who belayed my climb was holding
the rope so tight that he almost lifted me during the climb. Has anyone
else had a similar experience on RCCL? I'm wondering if it's just
standard policy in order to avoid any potential accidents.

Howard, I think it depended on the handler. All four of us climbed at the
same time. The staffer who helped son and me gave us no lift on the climb--in
fact, son chose the most difficult approach, and because of his short legs,
it took a long time! Craig and daughter went up with the other guy, and I
do remember daughter (who's done a bit of climbing) complaining (privately)
that the guy practically lifted her. I told her to go up with our guy--she
did and had a "normal" climb.

It was the staffer in charge--who had climbing expertise--who boosted the
climb. The staffer who admitted to me he had been put in that job just a
few minutes before we walked up (now that was a reassuring thought!) just
let us go.

No one was waiting when we climbed, either--which I'm sure makes a difference.

How cool that your whole family climbed at the same time, Diana. What
you're saying makes a lot of sense. I guess if I had a choice, I go
with the guy who had experience. Better to get a little lift on the
climb than to chance a slip with a belayer who might not have the skill
to stop a fall.
(I you all, or should I say y'awl, go on the Elation together, be sure
to try to the water slide. It's a blast).

Hi Howard,
No, my rock climbing expierence was a bit different, while he was holding the
rope, it was not at all tight, I really had to lift myself, although he was
giving me some good pointers. At times I didn't know what arm/leg to move next
and he helped me out that way. Yes, it was awesome to get to the top and I
loved repelling down, what a gas.

We're scheduled for a Voyager cruise and I think I'll try it again. Would you
go again?

Hey Donna,

I will go again, with or without slack. Last year I starting climbing a
wall at my gym; but there is something about climbing to a point that's
over 100 feet from the sea below, on a moving ship, that is really special.

Yes. My daughter is quite good at climbing the walls, and she is also very
light (heredity will change that the day she turns 30, but that's a
different story). She complained that the guy on belay lifted her off her
feet a couple times because he had the rope so tight. I'm sure they need
to do that for people who seem unsure on their feet, but for an active teen
who tells them that she's experienced, it seemed a bit much. Then again, I
don't have to deal with the insurance claims, which I'm sure would be filed
at the drop of a hat by the many cruisers.

What's at the top of the rock that would make me want to climb it? :-)
