Is there a suitable day trip ticket or tour, that takes in both these
sites ? It would be nice to take a Dona (Danube) route one way, and
return by train or bus.

Thanks in advance !

Both these towns are very easily accessible from Budapest either by bus,
train or river boat (summer only).
No need to do a "tour" - just get a ticket at any of the main bus or train
stations.
See http://wikitravel.org/en/Szentendre and
http://wikitravel.org/en/Esztergom for more details.

Quite right. I did consider trying the public transport, which I
usually do in Europe.

I found that it is a little difficult to put this together in a day,
for practical reasons. Eastern Europe's accompanied tours also seem to
be quite reasonably priced compared to the the west (like Germany,
Austria and ... Switzerland). If you must see both, I suggest either
www.citytour.hu or eurama.hu. I have no connection to either. However,
I plan to try it out in early April.
