Austria official state song.
Is it true that "Eidelweiss' from Rodgers and Hammersteins 'Sound fof Music'
is the state song of Austria? Good choice if it is true. Gary 'Gatsby' Nichols |

Gary 'Gatsby' Nichols If by state song you mean the same thing as national anthem, then no it is not. The national anthem of Austria is "Land der Berg," set to a melody once thought to have been written by Mozart, though that is now disputed by most musical scholars. Ron |

The national anthem is cleverly entitled "Bundeshymne" which loosely translates as "Federal Anthem," based around a melody attributed (some say erroneously) to Mozart. -- hambu n hambu hodo |

"The sound of Music" is an American Musical that is not known in Austria! Just tourist-guides around Salzburg know that Musical! E.g.: Michael Moore was in Vienna last week and started to sing that song IIRC before starting a speech and was surprised that nodoby in audience was singing with him. Actually the people didn't know what he was singing! lg Gernot |

Not only from this appearance, it was a shock that the currently most popular critic of the official and mainstream America doesn't make a very intelligent impression either. Jens |

No, of course not. Is it likely that any country would sit around
waiting until the 1960s for a Broadway musical to provide their national anthem (let alone one with all the political points to be made that Austria had) ? They have an innocuous tune I was told was by Mozart (who else?), but apparently it isn't [but then, this is the country that tries to persuade you Beethoven was Austrian and Hitler German g) and some fairly anodyne words about mountains and streams and forests and such. If you do a search on Google for "national anthem" and Austria, you should be able to get both words and music. One such site is http://david.national-anthems.net/at.htm PJW On Fri, 28 Nov 2003 19:52:26 -0800, "Gary Nichols" wrote: Is it true that "Eidelweiss' from Rodgers and Hammersteins 'Sound fof Music' is the state song of Austria?
