Also you can build a lot of 'slack' into your itinerary. I normally drive on
back roads as far as possible and reckon to cover only 200 miles in a day.
It's much more restful and you see a great deal more of the country. It also
means that if I lose a day for any reason I can easily make it up by
switching to motorways for part of the journey.

Good advice. I hardly ever book rooms, and just arrive at a place that
looks nice and look then. I rarely have to move on to another village or
town, but it can happen.

200 miles a day on twisty mountain roads is a lot, but is a value I'd
reckon with on normal country roads too. I average about 120 miles/day on
my sportsbike in say, the Dolomites, and then I'm knackered. Admittedly
it's less stressful in a car.

Hi,

I'd be happy to book it for you... but the "self drive" puts you in a
rental car and I'd shy away from anything but the booking and
suggestions of where to go etc.

the book first and last day with a rental in the middle can be a lot of
fun... and a real adventure... but the agent can't guarantee you will
make the hotel in time etc and can't really be responsible if you get
lost and drive 500 miles in the wrong direction...

As Gerrit spotted, I'm in the UK, and it's my own car. *The one that
bothers me is arriving at the ferry port, only to find the ferry's been
cancelled, "and here's a full refund of your ticket" - leaving me with a
weeks worth of hotels the other side of a bit of sea.

Shame you aren't this side of the pond!

Andy

its worse than that, you might make the ferry....and then it decides
to roll over.....

Or as happened to us a couple of months ago in Norway - we made the ferry
and then its engine would not start. :-(

Better than the near new P&O ferry that we were booked on that didn't
arrive in Hull because it's propeller hadn't fall en off as it passed the
Hook of Holland.

What?

Around 1990. Either Nausea or NorSun.

According to Wikipedia, Pride of Canterbury.

Though that doesn't quite fit. Perhaps they make a habit of it!

Perhaps I should be asking about taking the Chunnel.

Bump started it?

No.

We very rarely make bookings for accommodation so we just changed our route
and in fact we ended up in a different town from the one we had expected to
be in when we left in the morning.
Just goes to show one shouldn't have "set in concrete" itinerary ever.
