Is Vegas Still Recession-Proof?
Hey folks...
I'm working on a piece about the impact of the economic slowdown on Las Vegas for a national publication and I'm curious whether the various problems in the economy these days -- high gas prices, high airplane ticket prices, high food/lodging/show prices in Vegas, credit issues -- are impacting any of YOUR travel plans this year. Are you not attending a big convention you always do? Are you finding really good deals offered from hurting resorts? Have you seen ANY change at all in your travel or gambling behavior? Please e-mail me at SteveFriess [at] aol.com if you'd like to offer me your thoughts. In order to use your remarks, though, I'll need to use your full real name. Thanks everyone, Steve Friess Site: SteveFriess.com Blog: VegasHappensHere.com Podcast: TheStripPodcast.Com |

Just look at the third quarter of the year 2001, after the 9/11 attacks. Lots of layoffs occurred in Vegas casinos and they were all but giving away rooms for free. Some friends and I were able to book a group of three rooms for around $40 per night at the Venetian that December and none of us gambles much. This year, I can tell you that my particular employer has cut down on travel, and I work in an area that usually does well in a recession and I see no sign of that changing. In fact, there's a conference next month in Las Vegas, where I can get the $1,300 conference fee waived, but my employer won't fund the travel expense for my to fly out there for a few days from the east coast. Your employer sounds like one cheap prick. |
