The most romatic place/area in Siena
Finally thanks to a wealth of input I have decided that Siena is the
place to go to in Tuscany with my girlfriend. I'm now looking for recommendations within Siena, even down to actual places people have stayed at and they can strongly recommend. Looking for the following in order of preference, romantic, amazing views, nearby winerys, good food. Thanks in advance. |

A restaurant my wife and I love and find extremely romantic is the Ristorante Grotta Santa Caterina, at Via della Galluzza 28. This is right in the heart of old Siena, not far from the shrine of Santa Caterina. It has a wonderful atmosphere, with vaulted brick ceilings like an ancient wine cellar, soft candlelight, and lots of quiet corners for privacy. The food is excellent, the wines equally so, and the prices extremely reasonable. We had an excellent dinner here in 2003 for 75.00 euros; it would probably be more now, but still less than most comparable places in the city. We recommend it highly. Ron Audet Fredericksburg, VA |

It's not cheap, but I highly recommend staying at the Palazzo Ravizza. -- Ken Blake Please reply to the newsgroup |

It is unlikely that you will be disappointed: www.anticatrattoriabotteganova.it www.ilcanto.it Compagnia dei vinattieri, via delle Terme, 79 Osteria Doccino, via Doccia, 10 Da Enzo, via Camollia, 49 Osteria Le Logge, via del Porrione, 33 Wine: Save your feet a lot of wear and tear: http://www.assoenoteche.it/siena/home.htm It is in the old fort in the piazza where the buses stop. They have got acres, or is it hectares, of bottles of wine and you can also get a decent feed there too. If you can manage to chat up a friendly functionary, you should get the latest on where you can visit a suitable winery. Views: Siena was building what was going to be the biggest Duomo in Christendom, far exceeding that of Florence but, sadly, in 1348, the black death put paid to that idea. What is left is half a Duomo and the bare bones of the other half. The original, unfinished, outer wall is still standing and there is a stupendous view from the top of it. For the entrance fee for the museum, you can climb the facciatone next to the cathedral. Originally meant to be the long part of the cross shape of the "new extended" cathedral, you're allowed to climb to the top by way of a narrow spiralling staircase and peer out over the edge. Not recommended for those with fear of heights! Romantic: You will have to do that your self. |
