Don't know about that but it'll be nice to be able to have a beer on
the way home from work when I finish at midnight....

Until now, another advantage of train travel! They're not covered by
licensing laws and can serve alcohol whenever they want.

Not many serve a decent pint of real ale though....

True. None do that I'm aware of.

Wasn't there some proposal mooted recently to ban alcohol on trains?

Yes, but it seems to have frittered away. Private Eye reports that the
home secretary frequently buys alcohol on the train from London to
Norwich! Train operators can ban alcohol on trains already- and
frequently do.

There's a pub a couple of minutes walk from me (which I've
never visited), and it will be open until 1am now.

Could I ask, which pub that is?

One of the Holts pubs on Bury Old Road hopefully....that would be very
convenient for me.

The Bee Hive. I'm pretty certain it's not a Holts pub, and to tell the
truth, from the outside it doesn't look very nice _inside_. I've never
been in it.

I'd be surprised if they haven't applied for later licenses too.

At least NuLab hasn't combined with old Tories like they have in
Germany.

I think you'll see that happening soon - there are bills coming up to do with
social security reform which NuLab are likely to need Tory votes to get through
due to back bench rebellions.

Nor have they increased VAT by 3% planned to extend
retirement to 67 ...

That too. We're due an announcement on pensions soon and extending the
retirement age was one of the favoured options.

I foresee a flood of German immigrants to UK.

Not when they see the level of the UK state pension.

Thanks. Doubt it serves real ale then - it seems the only pubs in the Prestwich
area which still do are Holts pubs (apart from the Church).

Certainly hope so :-)

A quick web search suggests they have Fullers London Pride..

There are several Holts pubs within as easy walk from where I live. I'll
give them a try when the smoking ban takes effect!

Just remembered- you can check this all online at www.bury.gov.uk

Of Holts pubs, these ones on Bury Old Road have applied for later
licenses-

Coach & Horses- 3am

Welcome Inn- 3am

Most of the others seem to have done the same, though I imagine that the
3am closing will probably only be done on Fridays and Saturdays.

In Scotland we have had longer drinking hours than south of the border
for several years.

It hasn't really changed drinking habits much. People just go out
later especially the younger generation, who have a few drinks at home
first before going out clubbing.

Personally I don't think extending the licensing laws in England and
Wales will reduce drunken behaviour but it will give some a longer
social evening to enjoy a drink or two.

Lindsay.

One complication is that people might have time to realize how lame and
less-civilized most U.K. beer is (the historical remnant of taxation based
upon original gravity) if they don't have to guzzle their pints so quickly!

http://www.allaboutbeer.com/features...ngthepour.html
"The British bitter and pale ales of today, as good as they are, remain
tax-stripped ghost of beers past. Most of them are rather mild, fairly dry
beers, many under 4% ABV, with a medium hop aroma at best. They are a far
cry from the much maltier, more heavily hopped British ales of the 18th and
19th centuries."

Blimey! I can't stand up after a pint or two of Fuller's ESB and
that's "only" Original Gravity 1052.
