Default Funny/Crazy Hotel Incidents

Dear all

Apart from travel guides, I also write short stories and novels (still mainly
for myself). Recently, I can't get the idea out of my mind to write a story
set in a hotel.

Since real life usually tops even the most creative imagination, I wonder if
you would be willing to share some of your craziest hotel experiences.

I am not looking for something Fawlty-Towers-like, but rather for the
follies of staff and guests in a usually well-kept hotel.

The following are two of my experiences:

When I was once travelling with colleagues, we stayed at a chalet-style inn
made entirely of wood and with smoke detectors in every room. While one of my
colleagues was on the loo, the area suffered a black-out and he had the great
idea to make some light by setting fire to some toilet paper ... The firemen
were not amused.

Last year in Copenhagen, we wished to pamper ourselves and stayed at the
Mermaid Hotel. When we arrived, I thought "That window looks strange" and
pulled back the plastified curtain. From the bottom frame up, the glass was
covered some 10 centimeters high by fungi ... On the next morning, we did not
wish to complain and simply asked them to change the burnt-out light bulb over
the bed so that we would be able to read. When we came back after dusk, the
light bulb had been changed, AND the window had been cleaned AND the window
had been left open all day ... in December. My feet took a week to thaw.

I would really enjoy to hear from you. Should anyone know of a
collection/database of such experiences, please drop me a hint.

Sibylle

One time I was just minding my own business relaxing in a hotel and
this guy who said he was a writer came up to me and asked me to give
him some ideas for a novel.

Is that crazy or what?

Did he offer you a proportional percentage of the advance and
royalties?

In article ,
says...

Hi

The question of royalties has come up. Please note that I have no publisher
whatsoever and hence no royalties. All my travel writing is a labour-of-love
and can be read for free on the internet:

The Internet Travel Guide to Hong Kong
http://www.pmgeiser.ch/hongkong

The Internet Travel Guide to Macau
http://www.pmgeiser.ch/macau

The Internet Travel Guide to Switzerland
http://www.pmgeiser.ch/switzerland

The Internet Travel Guide to Amsterdam
http://www.pmgeiser.ch/amsterdam

With regard to my novel writing you have perhaps seen that I wrote "still
mainly for myself." Semantically, this translates that I write for my own
enjoyment and that of my friends. Again, no publisher, no royalties.

Otherwise, I would never have posted the question here. Having been on the
Usenet for more than ten years (at that time, the idea still was to share
something), I really know my netiquette ...

Cheers
Sibylle

For inspiration, there's a wealth of hotel incidents in "The Hotel:
Backstairs at the World's Most Exclusive Hotel" by Jeffrey Robinson, an
apparent work of non-fiction set in Claridge's, London.
