Default Leaving JFK Airport while on transit

Next month I will travel from Italy to USA (San Diego). The return
flight has 12 hours between the SAN-JFK and the JFK-FCO legs. I
wonder if it\'s possible to leave the airport and have a quick your
of Manhattan even though JFK is not my final destination.

Thanks in advance

Should be no problem, as you have to clear customs at JFK and recheck
your luggage to San Diego.

I think there is baggage storage available for your carry-on stuff at
the airport.

It's easy to get into Manhattan. Just take the Air Train ($5) to the
Jamaica subway station, then the subway into Manhattan ($2).

12 hours is plenty. Get on the "air train" and you can take it either
to the NYC subway or the Long Island Rail Road. Last trip to NYC, I
tried both. The Subway has a lot more stops on the way to manhatten,
about an hour fifteen minutes while the LIRR took under 30 minutes.
The subway takes you to the A train which I took to the 14th street
station. It might be less time if you're only going to the lower east
side. I got on the LIRR at penn station at 34th st and 7th av.
From penn street station, you can conect to the subway system and go
anywhere.

That's true, if you're going to the center of Manhattan, it's better to
take the LIRR from the Jamaica AirTrain terminus than the subway. A
little more expensive, but faster and more comfortable.

I took the subway going from JFK to Manhatten and I was ready to panic while
on a train with no map and seeing stop after stop (about 25) that I didn't
recognize. I didn't start recognizing stations until about 4th street,
about 2 stops before my final destination. Next time I bring along a map.
