Forget to say. I got my ticket at Travelocity. How do I do this?

Try checking in on-line with the 6-character record locator that
Travelocity gave you.

Another thing you can try right after you get your ticket is to call
the airline with your 6-character record locator and ask for a seat
assignment.

However, some airlines limit the number of seats available for
assignment in advance, with those who have some level of frequent
flyer status being able to have a greater selection of seats in
advance. You have been collecting frequent flyer miles on your
several times per year flights across the Pacific, right?

Yes, I collected lots of miles in so call "Asia Miles", not the Marco Polo.
It does seems to offer much.

OK. My fault. Travelocity does not have seat assignments for almost all
international flight. I will avoid Travelocity from now on.

Which internet booking site do you recommend that offer seat assignments for
SFO - HKG?

Perhaps the Cahray one?

I booked tickets flying with Cathay Pacific indirectly (through
Trailfinders). I wasn't given any information in advance about online
check-in, nor the name of CP's own website, but looked it up and found
that I could check in online with the information I had on my e-ticket.
It meant I could get to the airport much later than otherwise.

I never able to get seat assignments.
Ever if I get to the airport 6 hours ahead of flight, I am always stuck with
terrible seats.

There is supposed to be an optimum time.... Too early is not always
best but too late is definitely worst..!

Follow the advice given: book it yourself with the airline and check-
in on line.. don't leave it too late.
For some airlines online check-in opens much earlier for people with
the more expensive tickets (possibly enabling you to grab a seat near
the emergency exit..).

Remember that online seat choice is almost never 'guaranteed' and the
airline can still 'bump' you (even if you have printed a boarding
card).

Somebody told me Cathay Pacific insiders give out good choice seats as favor
to friends, and get seat assignments weeks ahead of flight. And sometimes,
even sell choice seats and pocket the money themselves.

Any truth to this corruption practice?

Book direct with the Airline you prefer.
These middle men booking sites are often not the best way to go.

Most of my trips are open jaw flights with multiple carriers, stopped at
quite a few cities.
