London: paying tube/express bus tickets with credit card?
I found older discussions indicating that you could pay for them 6
years ago. What is the current practice? Is American Express accepted? Thanks! Deguza |

Is American Express accepted? Depends on the bus/coach company. You almost certainly will not be able to pay on board a bus by anything other than cash, but if you're buying from a ticket office of some sort they will likely take cards. The Tube do at the ticket offices and some machines. I'm not sure about AmEx, however; acceptance of that in the UK can be decidedly patchy. Neil |

Cards are certainly accepted on the tube and national rail - I don't know about express buses. At most tube stations there are some coin-only machines, but you can use cards either with the touch-screen machines or at the ticket office. Many tube stations have one ticket machine which only takes cards and not cash. Some types of ticket, such as travelcards, can also be bought from local newsagents; it's up to the individual shop whether they accept credit cards. Is American Express accepted? Not on the tube, which only accepts Visa and Mastercard. At least some national rail stations do accept Amex. I've never asked, but I assume that my local corner shop, which does sell travelcards and does accept Mastercard and Visa, doesn't accept Amex Martin |

Deguza The Transport for London site is www.tfl.gov.uk where everything is explained in (often confusing) detail. It looks like Amex is one of the cards accepted in the places where you can use credit cards, eg tube stations and London Travel Information Centres also Oyster Online Shops and telesales. Best of luck. .. |
